There is no shortage of push-to-start cars today, and the key in your pocket plays a lot more roles than you may know, here is an explanation on how these keys operate, what may go wrong and the whole process of replacement, explained simply.

How proximity smart keys work

A proximity smart key communicates continuously with your vehicle using radio signals and when it is close enough, the car detects the key and allows the owner to unlock and start the car without a traditional metal key inserted in the ignition.

Common problems with smart keys

Why replacements tend to be pricey

Smart keys contain more electronic components, and require specialized configuration to match the car's security system. This is why they belong at the expensive end of the spectrum. They can still be cut and programmed on site by fob programming.

A security advice
